INNOVATION WITH A GLOBAL EDGE: A CONVERSATION WITH CEO MARK GABEL
In an era of geopolitical volatility and rapid technological shifts, maintaining market position is no longer enough. Companies must evolve continuously to deliver greater value to partners and customers. For MSM Group, a leader in Mongolia’s automotive, beverage, and industrial sectors, the strategy centers on integrating innovation at the core of operations. By leveraging global partnerships, AI, and autonomous systems, MSM Group is helping customers operate more efficiently, safely, and sustainably. We sat down with CEO Mark Gabel to discuss how technology and Mongolia’s uniquely resilient business environment are driving the company’s next phase of growth.
Driving Innovation for Partners and Customers
For Mark, innovation is not optional. It is structural and it happens on two fronts. The first comes from MSM Group’s global partners, who are continuously pushing technological boundaries across automotive and industrial sectors. The second comes from within MSM Group itself, where new technologies and operational improvements are being integrated into everyday business processes. “Technology is reshaping every industry. We cannot be followers. We must be in the driving seat.”
In automotive, the future of mobility is ever-changing. Battery electric, hybrid, hydrogen and other emerging technologies are all competing to define the next generation of vehicles. MSM Group’s multi-brand strategy allows it to remain flexible as this transition unfolds. Partnerships with global leaders such as Mercedes-Benz, BYD and Ford ensure customers have access to the most relevant technologies as the market evolves.
At the same time, innovation is improving MSM Group’s own operations. AI tools are already being used to enhance customer engagement and efficiency. Automotive showrooms use AI-based monitoring to better understand customer flow and optimize interactions, while lead tracking and automation systems improve responsiveness and conversion rates.
Yet Mark sees the most transformative opportunities in mining. “Mining companies are under pressure to increase safety, reduce carbon footprint and improve productivity,” he explains. “Automation directly addresses all three.”
MSM Group is working with technology partners to develop fully autonomous road train solutions for mine sites – systems designed to improve safety while dramatically increasing operational efficiency. “When technology and mining intersect, the opportunity is significant. We must position ourselves there.”
A Multi-Solution Partner for Greater Efficiency
“Our customers don’t see us as just another supplier,” Mark says. “They see us as a solutions partner.” Unlike single-brand manufacturers, MSM Group brings together multiple global brands across different specifications and price points. That flexibility allows the company to solve operational challenges with tailored solutions, especially in complex sectors like mining. For customers, that flexibility translates directly into higher efficiency. Mining operators, for example, can access equipment, technologies and support systems tailored to the specific challenges of their operations, helping improve productivity and reduce downtime.
In an increasingly uncertain global environment, that adaptability becomes a competitive advantage for customers themselves. Geopolitical volatility, rapid technological change, and sustainability pressures are reshaping industries worldwide. For Mongolia, a commodity-driven economy, this creates both risk and opportunity.
“Mining and industrial will benefit from this cycle,” Mark explains. “Gold remains profitable even at lower price levels, and copper demand continues to outpace supply due to electrification and sustainability trends. The next five years will favor companies positioned around productivity and efficiency.” But the deeper transformation, he emphasizes, is technological. “The real change is not only about commodities,” Mark says. “It’s about how technology helps our customers operate safer, smarter and more efficiently.”
Sustainability: A Strategy in Action
For MSM Group, sustainability is no longer a branding exercise. It is becoming part of day-to-day operations. Global partners such as Mercedes-Benz are moving toward carbon-neutral dealership networks, and MSM Group is aligning with that direction. Across its facilities, the company is introducing solar energy systems, taking advantage of Mongolia’s abundant sunshine. Advances in energy storage are also making it possible to manage and deploy that power more efficiently. “The cost gap between sustainable and traditional solutions is closing,” Mark says. “That’s where tipping points happen.”
The same transition is underway in mining. MSM Group supplies electric and hybrid transport solutions for mine sites where infrastructure supports them. In locations where full electrification is not yet viable, hybrid systems provide a practical step forward, improving efficiency while reducing emissions.
Rather than reacting to regulation, MSM Group aims to work alongside customers to identify sustainable solutions that are operationally realistic. At the same time, the company is rethinking how it delivers service. Historically, mining support operations were centralized in Ulaanbaatar.
Today, MSM Group is shifting toward a model that places workshops, service teams and decision-making closer to mine sites. This approach requires investment in facilities, equipment and talent. But proximity delivers faster response times, stronger partnerships and improved safety outcomes. Differentiation will increasingly come from speed and service quality, not just product supply.
The Mongolian Advantage: Resilience and Speed
Mongolia’s market characteristics create a unique innovation environment. The country has rapidly adopted digital banking, AI-based loan decisions, and mobile-first payments. Low regulatory friction has enabled fast technological integration. Remote connectivity solutions such as Starlink now support operations even in rural areas.
“Mongolia is more technologically advanced than many assume,” Mark notes.
The workforce reflects similar strengths. Mongolian professionals are adaptable, resilient and internationally educated. Many return from overseas studies to build startups and introduce new business models locally.
That resilience forged in extreme climates and volatile economic cycles translates into entrepreneurial persistence. “People here do not give up. That mindset is powerful.”
The Road Ahead
Across automotive, beverage and industrial sectors, one theme remains constant: adaptability. Technology disruption, sustainability demands, shifting consumer behavior and commodity cycles will continue to reshape Mongolia’s economy.
MSM Group’s response is clear – stay multi-partner and technology-flexible, invest in automation and AI, move closer to customers, embed sustainability into operations, develop leaders, not followers. “Innovation is not a project,” Mark says. “It’s how we stay relevant.”
